The Study of People & Cultures

Radford University offers bachelor of arts and bachelor of
science degrees with majors in Sociology and Anthropology.

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology provides
students with a wide variety of courses designed to further
understanding and perception of social problems, social
processes and differing cultures within and outside the U.S.

Sociology attempts to understand human behavior
through an examination of individuals within group settings,
placing particular emphasis upon the social forces which
influence behavior. A central goal of sociology is to have
students gain insight into how their own lives are influenced
by the social relationships around them. Virtually all human
behavior is social behavior; thus, courses in sociology
examine in detail social groups of a variety of sizes and
compositions. Visit the
Sociology Program's website at http://soc.asp.radford.edu.

Anthropology is the comparative study of humans in all times and places around the world.  The goal of the anthropology major is to give students knowledge and hands-on applied anthropology experience in three fields of anthropology.  Cultural Anthropology is the study of living cultures in today's world; the goal is to understand, describe, and analyze cultural similarities and differences found on a global, international scale. Physical Anthropology studies the biological aspects of humans and other primates and explores the interactions between biology and culture. Archaeology reconstructs past cultures through analysis of the cultural remnants left behind. Visit the
Anthropology Program's website at
