The Study of People & Cultures

The Sociology and Anthropology Department offers students many opportunities to get involved and gain hands-on experience "doing" Sociology and Anthropology, both in and outside the classroom.  Those opportunities include:

Hands-On Experience through Class Projects, Independent Study classes, and Practicum classes.  Many of the department's faculty offer opportunities for students to actually "DO"  Sociology and Anthropology through class projects, Independent Study and Practicum classes, service learning opportunities, and faculty-student collaborative research.  These are excellent resume builders.
View the Anthropology and Sociology
Program web sites to learn more about potential classes and possibilities.  And talk with your professors and advisors who can help direct you to these opportunities.

Internships -- click here to learn more about Internships.
Talk with your Sociolog
y & Anthropology professors about possibilities for doing an internship related to your study interests and visit Dr. Mekolichick, the department's Internship Coordinator.  Many internship possibilities are listed on Dr. Mekolichick's web site and on the internship database located on the Radford University Experiential Learning Center's web site.

The Sociology & Anthropology Club -- a place for Sociology and Anthropology
students to get together outside the classroom.
Contact S&A faculty sponsor Cassady Yoder for information.

The Radford University Forensic Science Institute and the Physical Anthropology and Archaeology Laboratory are located at 109 Reed Hall.  The laboratory is a repository for significant archaeological and physical anthropological collections, including comparative primate (including human) skeletal remains and casts as well as archaeological materials in the form of pottery, soil samples, and projectile points. It also serves as a laboratory for on-going research of skeletal and archaeological remains as well as hands-on classroom facilities for upper division courses in Physical Anthropology (ANTH 320--Human Osteology; ANTH 330--Primate Studies; and ANTH 420--Forensic Anthropology), as well as Archaeology (ANTH 322--Method and Theory in Archaeology; ANTH 492--Field School in Archaeology).  In all of these courses, opportunities are available to students for hands-on experiential learning opportunities and laboratory study.  Contact Dr. Donna Boyd and Dr. Cliff Boyd for more information about the Forensic Science Institute and hands-on lab opportunities.

The Archaeological Field School.  The Radford University Anthropology Program offers an archaeological field school, usually every other summer.  Contact Dr. Cliff Boyd to learn more about the summer field school.

The RU Forensic Anthropology Team.
Th
ose students who successfully complete ANTH 320 (Human Osteology) and ANTH 420 (Forensic Anthropology) may be eligible for membership in the Radford University Forensic Anthropology Team, a volunteer group of students and faculty which provides forensic assistance to southwest Virginia law enforcement and Medical Examiners.  Contact Dr. Donna Boyd for information.

Radford University's Undergraduate Forum.  Each Spring RU holds an Undergraduate Student Forum where Sociology and Anthropology students present the results of their research.  This is another good resume builder.  Talk with your professors about the possibilities.  The Forum takes place each April.

International Study Abroad Opportunities.
Many of our Anthropology and Sociology majors choose to enhance their studies with international travel and study abroad experiences.  Talk with your professors about the possibilities.  The RU International Education Center has many opportunities to choose from -- visit their web site to view Study Abroad opportunities as well as international events taking place on the RU campus.
